Traditional materials, meet digital technology.
The blend of old and new creates exciting opportunities in a variety of architectural and design applications, perhaps none more so than with lighting. This project, for a residence in Philadelphia, PA, leveraged binary's expertise with robotic printing to realize stoneware pendant shades with final dimensions of approximately 8" [height] x 8" [diameter]. Because of the high shrinkage values associated with low-porosity stoneware, the printed forms needed to be ~15% larger - making these far too large for any desktop-scale printers.
Each shade was printed in approximately 20 minutes, left to dry for 4 days, then fired to cone 6.
